The event will be held at the parish center at 86 Mechanic St., Westfield,MA. All are welcome. We hope to see you there!
2 NEW BIBLE STUDIES BEGINNING IN SEPTEMBER
Many of our Christian brothers and sisters say that their religion is “bible-based”. As Catholics, the practice of our faith is also based on the complete Bible and traditions handed down from the first Christians.
The Bible is a complex compiling of many books, by many authors. We believe that all were inspired by God, the bible is a history book, a book of poetry, a book of worship and praise, a how-to book on how to live life fully as a child of God. And it is a book of prophesy; some that have been fulfilled and some we wait for. The Bible is a book that tells stories of God’s mercy and love for each of us. It is a book of hope. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life” (Jn 3:16).
If you question where our beliefs come from, read the Bible. If you want to know the origins of the Mass – read the Bible (much is found in Revelations). If you want to know about the Jewish faith – read the Bible (the story of Passover is in Exodus). If you need guidance in your life – read the Bible (try Ecclesiastes). If you need some words of wisdom, peace and hope – read the Bible. If you want to study with others – for whenever two or more are gathered in his name, He is there – join a Bible Study. We know that the Bible can be intimidating, but together we can find our way. We can all learn from each other, and we welcome.
With all of that in mind, we are beginning two Bible Studies in September. We are doing “An Introduction to the Bible” video based series starting on Monday, September 13th from 7 – 8:30 p.m. This study will continue for 7 weeks until November 1st. Participants will become comfortable finding their way around the Bible, develop a better understanding of its themes and writing styles, and gain clear insights about Catholic use and interpretation of the Bible.
Our second Bible Study will begin on Wednesday, September 22nd from 7 – 8:30 p.m. and be a study of the Gospel According to Luke. Marked by the compassion of Jesus, the Gospel stories of Luke demonstrate the universal nature of Jesus' mission. Luke's focus on God's faithfulness will encourage you to trust. This study is also video based and is 12 sessions. It will continue until December 15th.
For more information on either of these studies, or to register please contact Joanne Bagge at the Office of Religious Education at 562-5484.
We are also considering running a daytime Bible Study. Anyone with any interest in that, please also call the above number.
REFLECTION
St. Mary's Church is offering it first afternoon of reflection on Sunday, September 26th from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Genesis Spiritual Life Center in Westfield. Entitled "Embracing Forgiveness" it will focus on forgiveness as a process and an essential part of one's spiritual journey.
Forgiveness can be difficult to understand, and even harder to practice. When faced with the decision, "to forgive or not to forgive" you may often feel lost and alone. However, you are never along, because God is always present, and is waiting for you to embrace Him by choosing Forgiveness, "the Gateway to His Grace. Inner peace is possible for you!
This workshop is open to all (bring a friend, too) and will be hosted by Liz Harris and Katy Shea, co-creators of "Soul Sisters". Free will offerings will be accepted.
